Known for their rich interpretations of traditional jazz, the band brings together cornet, trombone, tuba, clarinet, guitar, banjo, washboard, and vocals in a sound that feels both timeless and alive. 

Rooted in early 20th-century traditions, Tuba Skinny’s music stretches across genres—from jug band tunes and spirituals to country blues, ragtime, string band music, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach reflects the full genealogy of American popular music, honoring its origins while keeping it vibrant and accessible. 

No matter how well known they’ve become or how high profile their gigs have gotten, Tuba Skinny has always returned to the streets. “We continue to play in the street because it’s a public space,” says Shaye. “We get to play for everyone: old, young, rich, poor, people from all walks of life. It keeps things interesting because it’s organic and unpredictable.
